GOLDEN LOTUS MANDALA A dazzling work of art by John Eichinger is comprised of 3,240 overlapping straight lines woven around 180 pins using a very strong and durable polyester thread in white, yellow and golden hues. The curves that you think you see are optical illusions. In its design, eighteen rotations of a basic cardioid are formed, which create an inner sphere of higher energy. A cardioid is literally a map of the path of a fixed point on a circle which rolls around the perimeter of another circle. This design appears frequently in nature. Crystals, including snowflakes, often resemble this form. The lotus occupies an important symbolic position in religious symbolism, representing both the process of unfolding and of purification. The artist began drawing geometric shapes in early childhood. Studies into mathematical principles and their relationships in nature led him further into his art form as a meditative discipline. Mindful of the definition of mandala as a "graphic symbol of the universe", Eichinger refers to his creations as "energy maps". Each design is a microcosmic map of principles that happen within the universe. Eichinger’s art enabled him to travel the world in his youth, which exposed him to many cultures that influenced his work. He has spent many years in the high tech world as a designer of complex computer information systems, and currently resides in Los Gatos, California.
